How are Reiki and Mindfulness linked?
When we look at the founding principles of Reiki we begin to realise that the Reiki system is grounded in a state of mindfulness. Living a mindful life is about balance and living in the present moment. It is about not letting the stresses of modern life complicate and confuse what is right now. Many of the founding principles of Mindfulness are mirrored in the five Reiki principles. Here we take a look and just how closely Reiki and Mindfulness are related.
So What are The Reiki Principles?
To Mikao Usui it was important that the systems of Reiki healing were supported with a set of spiritual guidelines. These guidelines would be a guide for living a virtuous, grateful and balanced life. Dr Usui believed that for a person to act as a channel for healing energy, they must first work to heal themselves. With the Reiki principles providing the spiritual framework, Reiki Practitioners can add balance, peace and substance to their life. Essentially, the 5 principles are a spiritual code to live by.
These five guiding ideals are thought to have been influenced by the five principles of the Meiji Emperor of Japan whom Usui admired. What’s more, these ideals are even engraved onto Mikao Usui’s tombstone. Although the exact wording varies, the core teachings are consistent across the board:
Just for today...
I will not worry.
I will not be angry.
I will do my work honestly.
I will be grateful.
I will be kind to every living thing.
The Five Reiki Principles
It is important that you realise that you are not expected to live every moment of your life within this framework. As humans we are all imperfect, and that is why each principle begins with “Just for today.” Significantly, you can without pressure or stress work on improving yourself daily. If you slip up today, you can always begin again tomorrow. The more you work with the principles, the more you will condition yourself to adopt them as a way of life.
Digging deeper: Reiki and Mindfulness
The five ideals aren’t about hand-positions or symbols but instead explore a state of mind, with the simple yet powerful phrase ‘Just for Today’ encapsulates. Mindfulness is about living in the present moment and being aware of yourself. It Is about quietening the mind of any unnecessary or harmful thoughts, to focus in on the in order to achieve a level of inner peace and calm.
Mindfulness is becoming an increasing important practise in our busy modern lives. Similarly, it is an important behaviour to practise as a Reiki Practitioner or Master. If the mind is frantic or distracted, our energy is also frantic and distracted. If our energy is all over the place, we do not have any focused energy within to heal ourselves let alone help others to heal themselves.
To become more familiar with the Reiki principles it is advisable to read them aloud at least twice a day. The Five Reiki principles mean different things to each one of us. Importantly, meditation will help to unlock your own perceptions.
Reiki and Mindfulness – Meditation
Simply sit or lie down in a comfortable position and close your eyes. Repeat one of the ideals several times aloud using it as a mantra. Become aware of your breathing – this is the quickest way to become centred in the moment. As you become consciously aware of your life giving breath. When you start to feel relaxed take 10 more deep breaths. Breathing out and releasing any emotions or worries that come to mind when you think about each principle – don’t dwell on any thoughts or feelings or expectations just accept that there are there and let them go with each breath. As you inhale peace and calm and exhale, drift into a deeper meditative state. Finish with an expression of gratitude – thank you, thank you for this moment. Feel that gratitude surround you, feel its peaceful warmth. Focus only on that for as long you feel is right.
