Reiki Explained: What is Reiki and What Reiki Isn’t?
To answer the question ‘what is Reiki’, its good to first take some time to study what Reiki isn’t. That is, it is helpful to consider some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding Reiki first. Therefore, here we reassess the most common misunderstandings about the healing power of Reiki. As we bust each myth, we focus in on what this reveals about what Reiki actially is!
Myth: Reiki is very complicated
Reiki is open to all. There is no complicated secrets and rules that you must learn verbatim to pass an exam. Students and teachers of Reiki are on a lifelong journey to understand and connect with the universal life energy that flows through every being.
To practise Reiki, a Reiki student must be initiated or attuned to the universal Reiki life force by a Reiki Master. Next, they must progress through a series of training and practical work to strengthen their energy-channelling abilities. In essence, the more you invest in Reiki, the more you strengthen your ability to channel it.
What is Reiki: Reiki is open to everyone. Reiki can be mastered by anyone who wants to learn the system.
Myth: Reiki Can’t be Studied
Certainly, that is not true. Actually, there are three levels of Reiki which take a student through to mastership.
Reiki 1 or Shoden in Japenese – this is the first degree of Reiki and acts as the foundation for Reiki practise. In Reiki I, you are attuned to the Reiki energy. You learn how to perform Reiki on yourself, and others. You learn about the Universal Life Force and the history of this healing system.
Reiki 2 or Okuden in Japenese, advances you abilities in the treatment of other people. You learn how to use the first three Reiki symbols. You are taught how to perform distant Reiki techniques. After this level of training you are considered a Reiki Practitioner.
Reiki 3 or Shinpinden in Japanese is the Master/ Teacher level of Reiki. Crucially, you receive the Reiki master attunement and Master Reiki symbol. Vitally, you learn how to give attunements to others.
What is Reiki: Reiki can be taught and studied.
Myth: Reiki Practitioners are Healers
We talk about the healing power of Reiki energy, but it is important to remember that as a Reiki practitioner you are not healing your clients. The people receiving Reiki are in fact healing themselves. You are merely the channel. You enable the client to draw the healing Reiki energy through your hands to the place it is needed.
What is Reiki: Reiki is energy healing system, but the practitioners are not healers.
Myth: It is not diagnostic.
Reiki is a practice that does not diagnose. It relies on the wisdom of the body to know what it needs and wants, in contrast to other invasive health care practices. The body is a homeostatic being – it wants to restore balance. In fact, Reiki just harness the body’s own natural ability to heal.
What is Reiki: Reiki is intelligent and responsive to your needs.
Myth: I don’t have time to master Reiki
Some say that Reiki teachings can only be passed on by word of mouth. Maybe, you were told that you have to serve a long apprenticeship before you can become a Reiki Master. This is all quite untrue and unnecessary.
Indeed, Dr Usui was attuned to all the levels of Reiki in one go – he became a Reiki Master all at once – no waiting times for him. He issued all his students with written manuals and his only apprenticeship was that of life itself.
Remember, once you have completed your Reiki Master course and received your distant attunements you will have the rest of your life to master and improve your knowledge and healing skills.
There’s really is no hurry…Reiki will never overwhelm you – you can never go too far too fast.
What is Reiki: Reiki mastery happens over a lifetime. There is no rush.
Myth: Home study dilutes the Reiki energy
It is our belief that Reiki energy is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. We cannot change it or dilute it, we are merely helping to channel/focus and direct the energy. The person receiving reiki and or the attunement is doing all the work by being open to reiki. Reiki’s unfathomably intelligence performs the attunement.
Therefore, you cannot perform the attunement ceremony incorrectly. No matter how great or small our experience with reiki, it’s important to remove the ego and realise we are only the vessels, the conduits. Reiki goes where it is needed.
Importantly, Reiki will never do any harm. The energy itself precludes it.
Myth: Is it not possible to distantly attune someone to Reiki
It is absolutely possible to attune someone distantly to Reiki. They really do work. Indeed, ten of Thousands of people who have already received the distant attunements are testament to the power and validity of distant attunements.
